Theres really no such thing as being sick!
Or that’s not true.
You can get really sick, obviously. Its not like we are like superheroes, even though I’d like to think I am. But hopefully never so sick, you still can’t do some kind of work.
I mean, a lot of work, as an actor, doesn’t really require more than a laptop/Ipad/phone and a creative mind… And then you’re off! Off to building your career, and hopefully learn a lot, even though you’re sometimes forced to be in bed.
Today, I had a whole day scheduled to go singing, do a Meisner technique class, see my friend and my newborn godson, and a massage (you gotta maintain that body, as well as the mind and soul.
Well the higher power/the universe didn’t have the same plans as me. So I got sick. Not deadly sick, but sick enough, to not wanting to poison everyone around me, and enough to make me stay home.
There is always something you can do!
As a great mentor once told me ” to be great at something, you have to work at it everyday…”
And it doesn’t mean you have to be in front of a camera and do lines all day, every day. But what ever you can do, to get experience, is valuable!
Go live your life, gain experience in every way possible. Also if it means, sometimes doing it from your bed or couch. (Or even your favourite coffeehouse.
I didnt really want to “waste” my day, today, by not doing anything, so I decided to do some work on my blog, and check out some great advice from actors that I’ve always admired. So I’m going to share some with you here.
Tom Hanks is someone I’ve always admired for as long as I can remember! What I didn’t know, but obviously should have known, is that his beliefs about acting, is somewhat the same as my own!! What!!!!! YUP!
Actually, it’s something I’ve discovered along the way, is a very common “red thread” for a lot of actors. Especially in America.
That, acting is really not a matter of ACTING, but more a way of RE-acting. There’s a HUGE difference!
In life, we don’t just wander around, acting. Well I sincerely hope you don’t!! (Maybe we do, sometimes… Survival mode gets turned on sometimes, I guess.)
We react to what other people, circumstances and events are giving us. And that’s what acting really is about.
It shouldn’t be that hard to get into that state of mind. But it is! And why is that?? Cause, we are humans, and we have egos – Big ones!! And for some reason, it gets in our own way of just being, living, re-acting, and enjoying life!
Well lets just watch this video.
Here it is, with Tom Hanks:
